PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS

Kirkus Indie Reviews

Kirkus Reviews is a well-established trade book review publication. Kirkus’s reviewers include “librarians, business executives, journalists from national publications, PhDs in religion and literature, creative executives in entertainment and publishing industries as well as other professional reviewers.” And, while the magazine doesn’t guarantee positive reviews, authors can, upon receiving their review, decide whether or not they want it published. Should they decide to have it published (at no extra charge), Kirkus will distribute it to partner sites including Google and BN.com.

IndieReader Review

IndieReader is an established online resource for indie authors featuring news and editorials on the world of self-publishing as well as an indie-only bestseller list. Reviews, once completed, are posted on IndieReader’s website, and authors can post them to other websites, such as Amazon, as well. Titles that earn four or five stars receive an “IR Approved” sticker, and the site occasionally publishes reviews of its favorite books on USA Today and The Huffington Post.

Self-Publishing Review

Self-Publishing Review, an online magazine that features coverage of the indie book world as well as editing services, offers a number of options for paid reviews. The most basic option gets authors a review of at least 500 words (quite lengthy, by industry standards), a spot in the site’s bookstore, a link in the monthly newsletter, and other small perks, including the option to have the review posted on Amazon and BN.com. The site’s turnaround—one month—is also shorter than that of most services.

BlueInk Review

BlueInk claims that its reviewers are “carefully vetted, professional writers and critics from mainstream media publications or notable online websites; editors from respected publishing houses; or professionals who have a demonstrated expertise in the subject matter of the book reviewed.” It also boasts relationships with librarians, agents, and publishing professionals, as well as with publishing databases and outlets such as Ingram, Oasis, Publishing Perspectives, and idreambooks.com, a book review aggregator. The site also provides instructions for posting reviews on Amazon and BN.com.

Clarion Book Review

The industry's first and most trusted fee-for-review service for indie and self-publishers. We use a team of more than one hundred qualified reviewers to help you connect your stories with the hearts and minds of booksellers, librarians, and readers excited to find undiscovered indie literature. Our 450-word reviews critique all aspects of your book and have an express delivery of 4-6 weeks. With your permission, your review will be posted on our high traffic website and licensed to book wholesalers. Our partners, such as Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Cengage, Bowker, and EBSCO will spread the word to thousands of librarians and booksellers.

LEGAL STUFF

U.S. Copyright Registration Form

Copyright protects your work from use, sale, or production by anyone else. It is an optional part of the publishing process, but is recommended if you intend to market your book broadly.

ISBN Number

ISBN is used to identify books commercially. Each number is unique so no other book can be associated with it. The ISBN is located as part of the barcode on the rear of your book and is placed on the copyright page. An ISBN is not required to publish a book, but is needed if you wish to sell your book on Amazon or in bookstores.

LCCN Library of Congress Number

A Library of Congress catalog control number is a unique identification number that the Library of Congress assigns to the catalog record created for each book in its cataloged collections. Librarians use it to locate a specific Library of Congress catalog record in the national databases and to order catalog cards from the Library of Congress or from commercial suppliers.

Barcode for the Back of Your Book

A barcode is also an optional part of the publishing process, and is not needed if you do not plan to market your book. But if you wish to sell your book in stores or have it in libraries, you will need one.
